Snow Photo Ideas | A storytelling challenge for your next snow day

February 10, 2025

I know a lot of us are ready for spring, but like it or not, snow is in the forecast for tomorrow. This might be the last snowy week of the year (hopefully?), so why not take some time to capture your family’s snow day vibes? The images will become more and more special over time, plus focusing on a fun creative outlet can be a welcome source of inspiration when you’re stuck at home in winter weather. Keep reading for snow photo ideas to use this week!

The view from the windows

I love the view from our kitchen window because it so nature-filled and private. The vegetation blocks out the rest of the neighborhood, so it’s like we have our own little private tree house. Every time it snows, I love to capture the wintery view out that window. Pro tip — Make sure you’re focused on something outside, not inside, so that your camera will expose for the bright outdoor light, not the darker indoor light.

The front of your home

This one is classic, my friends. You need a pretty shot of your snow-covered house. I’d suggest going out first thing in the morning or in the evenings so that you get that nice soft light and avoid harsh shadows.

Hot Chocolate

My kids love playing in the snow, but they love coming in for hot chocolate just as much. We don’t get a ton of snow in Richmond, VA, so I mark the special occasion by making homemade hot cocoa on the stove, and then topping it with whipped cream and sprinkles. I love to capture the kiddos’ delight in enjoying it, since it’s such a rare treat ✨

Pro tip – play with black and white! It can create a whole new vibe for storytelling and give your images a timeless quality.

Sledding!

It’s hard to get a good action shot! But I like to stand just down the hill from my kids, maker sure the sun off is to the side to create some nice side light, and then take LOTS of shots. Out of dozens of action shots, I usually end up only keeping one or two.

Pro tip – The nice thing about digital photography is that ever-accessible delete button! Don’t be afraid to use it.

Pets 🐶

This requires a bit of strategy and finesse because pups are always moving, but if you take a treat outside with you, you may have more luck! If you’re more of a cat person, shoot some indoor photos of your cat curled up by a window. Nothing cozier.

Snow Throwing | Snow photo ideas

Get the light behind your subject and ask them to throw snow into the air! The sun lights up the glittery snowflakes, and it’s just magical.

Pro tip – Again, shoot lots of photos, and have them do it several times in a row. It’ll take a few tries to get the best shot.

Details

It’s tempting to only capture the staged or action shots. But storytelling goes to a whole new level when you capture details. The candle lit on the kitchen counter, a lost mitten in the snow, wet boots by the door — it’s all part of how the day unfolds, so it’s worth documenting.

Creative challenge | Snow photo ideas

Create 8-10 snow day images, using a mix of action shots, details, and landscapes. Create a carrousel post in Instagram and feel free to tag me (@sundayvibesphoto) or send it to my DMs! I’d love to see what you capture! 🤩 If you aren’t on instagram, send them to my email! sundayvibesphot0@gmail.com.

Happy Snow Day creating, my friends ♥️

As always, if you’d rather be in front of the camera rather than behind it, reach out to me about a family session! I’d love to create some storytelling images for your family this winter.
