Ever look at those super stiff, everyone-perfectly-lined-up family photos and think, “That’s… nice?” But then you see a snapshot of your kids giggling together, or a sweet moment of a parent comforting a little one, and that’s the image that truly tugs at your heart, right? That’s the dance between posed and candid family photos, and honestly, both have a special place in telling your family’s story. Today, let’s dive into how these two styles can work together to capture not just how your family looks, but the real essence of who you are.
The Timeless Charm of Posed Portraits

There’s something so lovely about a beautifully posed family portrait, and there have definitely been times when those smiling-at-the-camera- shots get me right in the feels. It’s a chance to get everyone in the frame and create a classic image that feels timeless. Think holiday cards, mantelpiece displays – these are the moments where a little direction can go a long way.
The key here, though, is to keep it real. We’re not aiming for robotic smiles! During a posed session, I love to focus on the connection within the pose. Maybe it’s holding hands, a gentle lean, or simply looking at each other with love in your eyes. We’ll find comfortable spots and natural interactions within the structure. It’s about capturing a moment of togetherness, even when we’re being a little intentional about where everyone stands.
The Unscripted Joy of Candid Moments

This is where the real magic often happens! Candid photography is all about those unscripted moments – the belly laughs, the quiet snuggles, the silly faces, the genuine interactions as your family just is. These are the images that reflect your personalities, your quirks, and the bond you have with each other.
Your little one chasing bubbles with pure delight, a shared joke that crinkles everyone’s eyes, a comforting hug during a tender moment. These are the fleeting seconds that often become our most treasured memories.
During a session with a focus on candid moments, my role is more of an observer, gently guiding you into natural activities and then letting the magic unfold. It’s about you interacting with each other, forgetting (as much as possible!) that the camera is even there.
The Perfect Harmony: Why Not Both?

Here’s a little secret: the most heartwarming and comprehensive family photo sessions often weave together the beauty of posed portraits with the authenticity of candid moments. They truly complement each other!
Imagine having that lovely posed shot where everyone is looking their best. But then, alongside it, you have a series of images capturing the playful chaos of your kids exploring, the gentle way a parent soothes a little one, or the shared laughter during a game. These candid shots add depth, emotion, and tell a richer story of your family’s dynamic.
As a lifestyle photographer, it’s my superpower to seamlessly transition between these styles. We might start with a few gently posed groupings to ensure we have those classic shots, and then we’ll move into more relaxed activities, allowing those genuine moments to unfold.
What Feels Right for Your Crew?

Ultimately, the best approach is the one that resonates with your family’s personality and what you envision for your memories.
